The Jaguar Trail tour in Tortuguero is a guided hike through the rainforest near the beach, ideal for observing wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, toucans, and jaguar tracks. The tour lasts approximately two hours and includes guides and sometimes equipment like binoculars and boots. Entrance to the National Park is paid separately. The route combines forest and beach access, allowing you to see the natural environment and turtle nesting during the season.

What to expect:

Biodiversity: See flora and fauna in their natural habitat, with guides who help identify animals and plants.

Nature: Hike trails that connect the forest with Tortuguero beach.

Sightings: You may see monkeys, sloths, birds, insects, and, with luck, tracks of jaguars and sea turtles.

Duration: Approximately two hours, although this may vary slightly.

What to bring:

Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and long pants.

Closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes.

Insect repellent and sunscreen.

Camera, binoculars (sometimes included in the tour).

Water.

Considerations:

Park entrance fee: Generally not included in the tour price and must be paid separately (approximately $17 USD for foreigners).

Guides: It is recommended to hire a certified guide for a better experience and safety.

Turtle Season: During certain times (July-October), night tours are available to observe turtle nesting, a different but complementary activity.

The Cerro Tortuguero hike from San Francisco is a popular experience offering breathtaking panoramic views from the highest point on the Costa Rican Caribbean coast, an inactive volcano. The tour combines a boat ride, a hike through rainforest with wildlife (monkeys, sloths, birds), and an optional climb to a viewpoint with stairs, making it a complete nature adventure that contrasts sharply with the town of Tortuguero.

What to expect:

Transportation: Take a boat from Tortuguero or Puerto La Pavona to the community of San Francisco, the access point to the hill.

The Hill: An ancient, inactive volcano, the highest point in the area at 119 meters (350 feet), offering views of canals, lagoons, forest, and the Caribbean Sea.

The Hike: A nature trail that can last about 2 hours, with muddy and slippery sections. A guide is recommended.

Stairs: An optional climb of approximately 430 steps leads to the main viewpoint for spectacular views.

Wildlife: Opportunity to see sloths, tapirs, basilisks, iguanas, monkeys (howler, spider, white-faced capuchin), and many birds.

San Francisco Village: A visit to this quieter village is included, offering a contrast to the tourist development of Tortuguero.
